Jonny Tyson - Co-owner and Head Tutor and Taster
Tastings are generally hosted by Jonny Tyson who has spent most of his career working in wine and beer. Having fallen in love with wine thanks to his vine-growing grandparents in Chianti, Jonny worked with Oddbins in Fulham and moved to Vancouver, Canada where he became a manager and buyer for various fine wine and craft beer specialist. He worked and managed restaurants with a focus on wine and craft beer, achieving his WSET Diploma and Court of Master Sommeliers Sommelier certification. On returning to the UK he became a WSET certified educator teaching courses and staff trainings to a wide variety of clients. He then expanded his skills to teaching beer as co-creator and head tutor of the Beer Professional Education and Training (BPET) program. After qualifying as a Beer Sommelier (IBD Beer Academy) and the first Advanced Cicerone® in Europe he continued his wine studies with the French Wine Scholar.
Jonny has a passion for engaging education that puts students at ease with the subject. He believes that the world of specialist knowledge is not the preserve of an exclusive clique, but should be open and accessable for everyone with an interest. Most of all, whether just tasting or studying for an exam, wine should be fun!
Jimmy Smith - Co-owner, Chief Wine Taster and Tutor
Jimmy has been working within the wine industry for 15 years with the past 10 years as a WSET-qualified tutor and assessor. Since 2007 he has educated over 6000 students through the WSET Level 1, 2 and 3 Award certification programs. Since 2016, Jimmy has also been one of the leading educators in the United Kingdom of the Wine Scholar Guild programs. In addition to these more formal qualifications Jimmy has held hundreds of private and corporate tastings across the UK focusing on the learning and enjoyment of wine, whisky and beer. Its the all-important infectious enthusiasm and passion for the world of wine that enables Jimmy to communicate to his audience without the use of confusing (& boring!) technical facts often detailed in wine tastings. Jimmy brings all the experience and recognition he has achieved at West London Wine School to South London, alongside his impecable taste and wine selection!
Julia Lambeth - Tutor
Many tastings are hosted by Julia Lambeth who has spent most of her career in the wine trade as a retail manager, learning and then teaching people about the world of wine. With a passion for all things wine as well as beer, spirits and sake, there is always going to be a varied list of events available.
Mahima Macchione - Tutor
Mahima is a relatively new addition to South London Wine School but has been a part of the Local Wine School fmaily for some time as she completed her WSET training with us. WSET certified, Mahima's love for wine has led her to leave a career in advertising behind to devote her time to learning and sharing her knowledge with other. She is always attending tastings, masterclasses and wine tours in a constant bid to discover her new favourites. She has keen interest in fine and unsual wines and loves introducing people to new and exciting wines, expanding their horizons and delighting their palates!
The Wine Tastings and Wine Courses are, above all, fun, entertaining and set in a relaxed atmosphere. They are seated, and tutored, and usually include visual aids and notes. Professional ISO tasting glasses are provided and no previous wine tasting experience is required. Our guests come by themselves, in couples or in larger groups and it is also a great way to meet others with the same interest in tasting and learning about wine.
